Jennifer Lopez sued for posting photos of herself

Jennifer Lopez is being sued for posting her photos from a Hollywood party. The photographer and a paparazzi agency claim she did not get permission to use them.

The singer shared pictures on social media. They were taken at the Amazon MGM Studios and Vanity Fair Party in Los Angeles. This event took place the night before this year's Golden Globes in January.

Photographer Edwin Blanco and Backgrid, his agency, filed lawsuits. They say they own the copyright to two photos of Lopez.

They argue that the pictures were used to promote her public appearances. The goal was to boost user engagement and increase shareability.

Backgrid and Mr. Blanco are seeking up to $150,000 (£112,000) in damages for each photo.

The images show Lopez in a white dress and faux fur coat outside Chateau Marmont. She posted them on Instagram and X with the caption "GG Weekend Glamour." Many fan and fashion pages then shared these posts.

The lawsuits state that Lopez's unauthorized use of the images is commercial. It was intended for self-promotion purposes.

For instance, she used the images to highlight her clothing designer and jewelry. This leveraged publicity from the event to promote her fashion affiliations.

Typically, a person in a photo does not own its copyright. That right usually belongs to the photographer or their company.

The legal documents say Backgrid and Mr. Blanco contacted Lopez's representatives after her post. They agreed on a deal and payment, but she has not signed it yet.

BBC News has reached out to Lopez's representatives for comment.

Lopez has faced legal action before for sharing others' photos in 2019 and 2020. Other celebrities like Dua Lipa, Gigi Hadid, and Khloe Kardashian have also received similar complaints.
