Rex Omar Urges Ghanaian Musicians to Focus on Local Awards
Rex Omar is a musician and a staffer for the Black Star Experience. He recently spoke about Ghana's music awards. He urged musicians to pay attention to these local programs.
In an interview with GhanaWeb on April 19, he said the Grammy Awards are for Americans. Therefore, Ghanaian artists should believe in their own award schemes.
Omar emphasized that disrespecting local awards is counterproductive. He stated, “If you disrespect the Ghana Music Awards, I don’t understand it.” He pointed out that the Grammy was not created for Ghanaians.
He also mentioned BET as an example of an American station with its own awards. “We have to believe in ourselves and what we do in Ghana,” he added.
Omar suggested that industry participants should unite to create a prestigious award program. This could attract musicians from other countries as well.
“We can develop our own award if we promote it well,” he said. Other nations may want to participate if it’s done right.
He concluded by stating that creating an impactful award involves developing a whole ecosystem around it.
