Let’s stop pretending; Twi should be Ghana’s national language

Actor and media personality George Quaye has sparked online discussions. He suggested that Ghana should accept Twi as its official national language.

Quaye spoke on Joy FM, as reported by MyNewsGh. He is Ga himself and understands the sensitivity of this topic. This is especially true for non-Akan tribes. However, he believes the reality is clear.

“Let’s stop pretending,” Quaye stated. “Twi has become the most commonly spoken language in Ghana.” He noted that even in the North, Volta, and parts of the Western Region, people use Twi when they don’t share a mother tongue.

He explained that the spread of Akan is due to convenience, not force. “The Akans are almost in the middle of Ghana,” he said. When people move across the country for various reasons, Twi becomes the easiest language to communicate.

Quaye's comments have led to heated discussions online. Many agree with him, while others worry about sidelining other rich Ghanaian cultures by promoting one local language.

However, Quaye insists his point isn’t about tribal superiority. “It’s just what it is,” he said. If another language like Ga or Ewe were widely spoken, he would say the same thing.
