Kumawood star Kwadwo Nkansah, known as Lilwin, has lost his request to pause a defamation case. The case was filed against him by actress Martha Ankomah for GH¢5 million.
The High Court in Accra rejected Lilwin’s application for a stay of proceedings. The court also awarded GH¢5,000 in costs against him.
Lilwin's legal team argued that the proceedings should be paused. They wanted to wait for the Court of Appeal to rule on an appeal. This appeal challenges the jurisdiction and venue of the case.
They claimed that since Lilwin lives in Kumasi, the case should be heard there. However, Martha Ankomah's lawyers opposed this request strongly.
Her lawyer, Nii Appiatu Plange, called it an attempt to delay justice. He noted that no significant progress had been made on the appeal. He also stated that Lilwin did not meet the legal requirements for halting the case.
Justice Forson Baah Agyapong agreed with this view. He emphasized that the application lacked merit and no exceptional circumstances were presented.
The defamation suit arises from comments Lilwin allegedly made about Ankomah. She believes these comments harmed her reputation. Previous attempts at an out-of-court settlement have failed.
The court has adjourned the case until June 9. On that date, it will resume hearing the main matter and audiovisual evidence is expected to be presented in open court.
