MUSIGA and Copyright Office pledge stronger collaboration to tackle music industry challenges

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and the Copyright Office are committed to working together. They aim to tackle key challenges in Ghana’s music industry. These include issues with royalty distribution and operational problems within GHAMRO.

On June 2, 2025, a high-level meeting took place. MUSIGA executives met with senior officials from the Copyright Office. They discussed solutions for longstanding industry concerns. The focus was on copyright protection, improving royalty systems, and resolving disputes within GHAMRO.

Royalty distribution delays were a major concern. MUSIGA President Mr. Bessa Simons highlighted that many musicians rely on these payments. Although about 80% of musicians are registered with GHAMRO, irregularities in payments persist.

Legal disputes have stalled GHAMRO's operations. Conflicts over election procedures and constitutional inconsistencies have arisen. Multiple court cases complicate matters further. The Copyright Office stated that only courts can impose interim leadership.

To resolve the deadlock, it was suggested to use neutral mediators or respected industry elders for dialogue. Mr. William Akwetey Bonsu from the Copyright Office urged parties to withdraw legal actions. He emphasized constructive engagement to protect the music sector.

Mr. Bonsu confirmed that legal guidance has been provided to honor judicial timelines. He stressed the importance of collaboration between MUSIGA and the Copyright Office for musicians' rights.

Mr. Simons shared updates on MUSIGA’s recent activities focused on digital trends and live performances. He also outlined upcoming events for the Union’s Golden Jubilee.

These events include Authentic Highlife Nights in July, She Rhythms Ghana Festival in December, and the Presidential Grand Ball, which has not occurred since COVID-19 began.

Attendees included MUSIGA General Secretary S.K. Agyemang, Administrator Vida Obeng Kwarteng Asante, and Samuel Awuku Djakete from the Copyright Office.
