The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, affirmed the government's commitment to menstrual hygiene. She also emphasized child protection and youth empowerment.
Dr. Lartey spoke at the Menstrual Hygiene and Sexual Abuse Talk on Friday in Accra. The event was organized by the Touching the Lives of Girls Foundation International. The theme was “Breaking the Silence.”
She noted that menstruation is a natural process. It should not be treated with shame or stigma.
The Minister highlighted efforts by her ministry and partners like UNICEF and the Ghana Education Service. They aim to improve menstrual hygiene management. She praised the launch of the National Sanitary Pad Distribution Program for two million schoolgirls.
Dr. Lartey stressed the importance of awareness in fighting sexual abuse. She also emphasized youth financial literacy. Young people should make informed decisions about money for their future.
“Let us build a Ghana where no girl is left behind because of her period,” she stated. “No child suffers in silence, and every young person has financial wisdom.”
She announced support platforms available for assistance. These include the Orange Support Centre, Boame App, and toll-free helplines: 0800 800 800, 0800 900 900, and 0800 111 222.
