The Minority in Parliament is demanding full accountability from the government. They want answers about gold and cash seizures made by National Security in February. The caucus claims these seizures are worth billions of dollars.
Since the operation, the public has not received updates. This lack of information raises concerns about the government's handling of the situation.
Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South, spoke at a press conference. He revealed that 12 containers filled with gold bars were found in Accra. An unspecified amount of cash in US dollars and Ghanaian cedis was also uncovered.
Media outlets across Ghana widely reported on this operation. Rev. Fordjour noted, “This operation has attracted significant media attention.” He emphasized that the public deserves to know how much was seized.
Nearly two months have passed without updates from National Security. Rev. Fordjour stated, “It is unacceptable that we still don’t know the exact quantity of gold or cash seized.”
The identities behind this large-scale shipment remain unknown. The government has not clarified its plans for these assets, which are still with National Security.
“We demand accountability,” insisted Rev. Fordjour. He called for a clear explanation regarding the seized gold bars and cash.
He questioned whether the government might divert these assets and later claim they are fake or counterfeit.
The Minority has given National Security a two-month deadline to provide an update on their investigation progress.
With no information yet, skepticism is growing among the public, according to Rev. Fordjour.
He assured citizens that the Mighty Minority will continue pressing for transparency from the Minister for Interior.
Rev. Fordjour highlighted how important transparency is for maintaining trust in government actions.
“The public’s growing scepticism is entirely understandable,” he remarked. He stressed that a clear account from the government is crucial to maintain confidence among Ghanaians.
In conclusion, he reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring transparency throughout this investigation process.
