Controversial Nigerian journalist Kemi Olunloyo has distanced herself from her family. This follows the death of her father, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo. He was a former governor of Oyo State.
In emotional Facebook posts, Kemi shared her feelings about his passing on April 6, 2025. She stated she would not accept condolences due to painful family experiences.
Kemi described her father as two different people. To the world, he was celebrated; to the family, he caused harm. She claimed he damaged their family bond and left deep emotional scars.
“My father destroyed our family unit,” she wrote. “He tortured us emotionally and physically.”
Kemi rejected the idea that she was her father's favorite child. She said this narrative was created for public perception. “My father marketed me as his favorite daughter,” she explained.
She alleged that he practiced traditional spiritual rituals known as juju. “My father was into juju heavily,” she stated. After confronting him on his 80th birthday, he later turned to Pastor E.A. Adeboye for guidance.
Despite everything, Kemi found it in herself to forgive him. However, she is done with the Olunloyo family now.
“I have forgiven my Dad for everything he did,” she said. “But you don’t know what’s going on in my family.”
Kemi reflected on her mother’s experience with her father’s polygamy. He earned a Ph.D. at 26 but became a polygamist in a way that hurt their family deeply.
“My mother married an intellectual who turned into a polygamist,” she noted.
For Kemi, this decision is final; she wants respect for her choice to move on from her past.
