Nigeria's World Cup bid falters after draw with Zimbabwe

Nigeria's hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are uncertain. Zimbabwe scored a last-minute equaliser, leaving Nigeria struggling in Group C.

Victor Osimhen gave the Super Eagles a lead with a diving header. However, Tawanda Chirewa from Huddersfield shocked the home crowd in Uyo. He scored in the 90th minute, poking past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

After six matches, Nigeria is now six points behind leaders South Africa. South Africa won 2-0 against Benin, thanks to Lyle Foster and Jayden Adams.

Nigeria missed the 2022 finals in Qatar and is currently fourth in their group. They trail Rwanda and Benin by one point.

Only nine group winners will qualify for next year's expanded tournament. The four best second-placed teams will compete for an intercontinental playoff spot. This playoff will determine the final spots in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
