Nintendo announces Switch 2 release date - and a new Mario Kart game

Nintendo has announced the release date for the Switch 2. The new console will launch on June 5. Fans have eagerly awaited this news since January. That’s when Nintendo confirmed basic details about the device.

During a Nintendo Direct presentation, over a million viewers tuned in. The company shared more information about the hardware and games. Mario Kart World will be released alongside the console, featuring a refreshed version of the classic game.

Other new titles include Elden Ring and Street Fighter 6. The Switch 2 promises better graphics and audio than its predecessor. It will also have a chat button for player communication during gameplay.

In the UK, the price will be £395, or £429 with Mario Kart included. Fans are excited to learn about available games for the new console.

Mario Kart World stands out with significant updates. It features improved water graphics and character designs. Players can expect expansive race tracks with varying weather conditions.

Notable third-party games like Elden Ring are also coming to Switch 2. Other announced titles include Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Hitman World of Assassination, and The Duskbloods.

A new Donkey Kong platforming adventure is in development too. Kirby Air Riders will arrive in 2025 as a sequel to a beloved game from 2005. Nintendo confirmed that compatible Switch games will work on the Switch 2.

Some games will receive updated editions with enhanced graphics and gameplay. However, Nintendo did not disclose upgrade costs.

The Switch 2 features a larger screen at 7.9 inches with improved display quality—1080p compared to the original's 720p—and HDR support up to 120fps.

There are minor changes like larger buttons and control sticks as well. Both controllers can function as a mouse in supported games, similar to PC gaming.

Nintendo claims its new audio technology provides an immersive surround sound experience but may not be a key selling point for many players.

The internal storage has been upgraded to 256GB, which is significant compared to previous models known for limited space.

A new C button on the controller supports voice chat functionality built into the system. Players appear at the bottom of the screen during chats, resembling Zoom or Teams calls.

The original Nintendo Switch is one of history's best-selling consoles, with over 150 million units sold since its launch in 2017. Only Sony's PS2 and Nintendo's DS have outsold it.

Its hybrid design allows use as both a handheld device and traditional home console, contributing to its success.

However, launching new consoles often faces challenges like hardware shortages—especially evident during past launches amid pandemic-related issues.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa mentioned that delays were partly due to ensuring sufficient production capacity for demand.

Recent global trade issues could also impact production and sales of the Switch 2 due to tariffs initiated by former President Donald Trump.
