Robert De Niro spoke at the Cannes Film Festival. He criticized US President Donald Trump during his acceptance speech. De Niro, 81, received the Palme d’Or lifetime achievement award on Tuesday.
He called Trump a “philistine president.” De Niro said, “In my country, we are fighting like hell for democracy.” He addressed an audience of major figures in showbiz.
De Niro emphasized that art is democratic and inclusive. He stated that art brings people together and seeks truth. He believes this makes art a threat to autocrats and fascists.
He criticized Trump for cutting funding to the arts and education. De Niro mentioned Trump's appointment as head of the Kennedy Center. He also condemned Trump's plan to impose tariffs on foreign films.
“You can’t put a price on creativity,” he said. “But apparently, you can put a tariff on it.” He called these attacks unacceptable and noted they affect everyone globally.
De Niro urged people to take action against these issues. He concluded by encouraging resistance to Trump with passion and determination, but without violence.
