Robert Francis Prevost elected as the new Pope, makes history as first US Pope

Robert Francis Prevost Elected 267th Pope of the Catholic Church

Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the new Pope on May 8, 2025. A white smoke emerged from the chimney of the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. He is 68 years old and becomes the first American Pope.

Many people worldwide expressed excitement on social media. They congratulated him on his election.

Prevost's election follows the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025. The late Pope was 88 years old at his death.

The election took place after a gathering of 133 Cardinal electors in the Sistine Chapel. The Vatican announced that Prevost would soon appear at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Before becoming Pope, Prevost led the Vatican office for bishop appointments. He also served as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru for several years.
