Roof collapse at Dominican Republic nightclub kills more than a dozen

At least 15 people have died after a roof collapsed at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic. Many others are injured, and rescue workers are still searching for survivors.

The incident occurred early Tuesday during a concert by merengue singer Rubby Pérez. The event took place at the Jet Set discotheque in Santo Domingo.

President Luis Abinader has expressed condolences to the affected families. Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Emergency Operations Centre (COE), reported that rescue efforts continue.

Ambulances have made over 100 trips to local hospitals, often carrying multiple patients. Officials are still assessing the total number of injuries.

Méndez remains hopeful that some people trapped under the debris are alive. The Jet Set is a popular nightclub known for hosting dance music concerts on Monday nights.

Video footage from inside the club shows people enjoying the concert while Rubby Pérez performs. In another recording shared online, a man near the stage mentions something falling from the ceiling.

He points towards the roof as he speaks. Moments later, a loud noise occurs, and chaos ensues as someone shouts for their father.

A band member told local media that the club was full when the collapse happened around 1 AM. He initially thought it was an earthquake.
