Samuel Dowuona: Alabaster Box lead singer laments Medikal using group's song without consent

Samuel Nii Narku Dowuona leads the famous acapella group Alabaster Box. He has expressed concern over rap star Medikal's alleged copyright infringement. Medikal reportedly used elements from Alabaster Box’s song "Akwaaba" in his new track, "Welcome to Africa."

Dowuona referenced recent copyright cases in Ghana. One involved Team Eternity Ghana (TEG), which faced music executive Kwame Mickey for using lyrics without permission. Another case saw producer Kobby Spiky Nkrumah win $250,000 against CAF for unauthorized use of his music.

“I praised Kobby Spiky when he won against CAF,” Dowuona said. He did not expect Alabaster Box would face a similar issue over their classic song "Akwaaba." He promised that more details would emerge soon.

At publication time, classfmonline.com found a letter dated April 8, 2025. It was addressed to Samuel Adu Frimpong, known as Medikal. The letter came from Sustineri Attorneys, representing Alabaster Box.

The lawyers stated that Medikal composed and promoted "Welcome to Africa" without authorization. They claimed he significantly sampled their song without rights or licenses. They demanded that Medikal withdraw the infringing song from all platforms and provide a detailed account of revenue generated from it.
