Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie and his legal team have denied reports. They claim they have not withdrawn their lawsuit against Ecobank Ghana Limited.
Sarkodie’s lawyers, the Robert Smith Law Group, called the claims "baseless" and "malicious." They said these reports attack their client’s integrity. The law firm urged media outlets to verify information before publishing it. They warned that such "prejudicial publications" could lead to legal consequences.
Ecobank used a look-alike of Sarkodie in an anti-fraud campaign. The campaign featured the hashtag #ItsGivingScam. In response, Sarkodie filed a civil suit against Ecobank and the look-alike.
The bank's advertisement stated: “Dear Valued Customer, we are live with our Anti-Fraud Campaign.” It aimed to raise awareness about fraud detection and scams.
Sarkodie was unhappy with how the bank used his look-alike. He believes it damages his brand. He is seeking general damages and a permanent injunction against further use of his image.
He also wants all related publications removed from digital and print materials. The bank must appear in court within eight days for interrogation regarding the defamation suit. If they fail to appear, it could negatively impact their case outcome.
Sarkodie has taken legal action for unauthorized use of his persona in advertising. This allegedly infringes on his intellectual property rights and publicity rights.
