Screenwriters Guild of Ghana, Producers Guild & National Film Authority forge alliance

James Gardiner is the Deputy Executive Secretary of the NFA.

The Screenwriters Guild of Ghana (SWGG), Producers Guild of Ghana (PGG), and the National Film Authority (NFA) recently met. They aim to establish global standards for Ghanaian filmmaking. Their goal is to build a sustainable and competitive film industry.

The NFA reaffirmed its commitment to creating frameworks for storytelling. They want Ghanaian films to meet international standards. A key focus is strengthening copyright laws and building relationships with creative guilds.

The SWGG expressed eagerness to partner with the NFA on initiatives. One initiative is the Pitch Ahoy programme, which supports emerging filmmakers. This program encourages innovative projects in the industry.

The NFA is working to secure grants for filmmakers. They are also discussing ways to help foreign productions access local crew and equipment easily.

Stakeholders are preparing for the National Film Dialogue on July 30th. This event will address important topics like insurance for equipment and logistics. Community representatives from the film industry will participate, offering input on current challenges.

During their meeting, SWGG and PGG stressed recognizing all sectors involved in film production. They emphasized helping these sectors integrate into the evolving industry landscape. The guilds also called for better incentives for foreign productions and fair treatment of Ghanaian crew members.

James Gardiner stated, “This is not just about film—it’s about creating a legacy.” He added that raising storytelling standards raises Ghana's profile as well.
