Screenwriters Guild of Ghana, Producers Guild, and National Film Authority forge alliance to elevate Ghana’s Film Industry

The Screenwriters Guild of Ghana (SWGG), Producers Guild of Ghana (PGG), and the National Film Authority (NFA) recently met. Their goal is to set global standards for Ghanaian filmmaking. They aim to build a sustainable and competitive film industry.

The NFA reaffirmed its commitment to creating frameworks for storytelling. This will help ensure that Ghanaian films meet international standards. A key focus is strengthening copyright laws and building relationships with creative guilds.

The SWGG is eager to partner with the NFA on important initiatives. One such initiative is the Pitch Ahoy programme, which supports emerging filmmakers. It also encourages innovative projects in the industry.

To support filmmakers, the NFA is working to secure grants. They are also discussing ways to improve access for foreign productions in Ghana. This includes crew, equipment, and logistics.

Stakeholders are preparing for the National Film Dialogue on July 30th. This event will address issues like insurance for equipment and logistics. Community representatives from the film industry will participate and share their insights.

During the meeting, SWGG and PGG stressed recognizing all sectors involved in film production. They want to help these sectors integrate into the evolving industry landscape. The guilds also called for better incentives for foreign productions and fair treatment of local crew members.

James Gardiner, Deputy Executive Secretary of the NFA, stated: “This is not just about film—it’s about creating a legacy.” He emphasized that improving storytelling raises Ghana's profile globally.

S. Kobbah Quaicoe, Acting Organising Secretary of SWGG, noted: “This collaboration with the NFA is essential.” He believes standardizing storytelling helps lift new creatives onto the world stage.

Danny Adjokatcher from PGG added: “We must create an ecosystem that attracts foreign productions.” He stressed protecting local talent while having serious discussions about inclusion.

Yaw F. Boakye, Acting President of SWGG, concluded: “Storytelling is our strongest currency.” He believes partnering with the NFA ensures that Ghanaian stories are respected worldwide.

This collaboration shows a united vision to transform Ghana into a thriving film hub. It aims to celebrate unique stories while meeting global market expectations.
