Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take action. He wants the President to address some troubling behavior within his government.
This appeal comes after a failed arrest of Assin South MP, Rev John Ntim Fordjour. The arrest was attempted by operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
In an interview on Joy FM's Middaynews, Afenyo-Markin expressed serious concerns. He described intimidation tactics used by some government officials against political opponents.
He stated, "The government has explained its side of the story." He added that if someone disagrees with proposals for a bipartisan committee or a commission of inquiry, that's acceptable. However, he believes it is wrong for officials to threaten MPs and cause them trauma.
Afenyo-Markin urged President Mahama to stop this "vicious political cycle." He emphasized that good governance should focus on people's needs, not persecuting rivals.
He warned that such actions could revive a culture of fear similar to the PNDC era. During that time, political arrests and suppression were common.
"Four years may seem far away," he said, "but it may be closer than we think." He stressed the need for politicians to break this cycle and focus on real governance issues for the benefit of citizens.
Additionally, Afenyo-Markin hinted at secret plots against the Chief Justice and other prominent figures. He suggested that the Minority is aware of these schemes and will respond accordingly.
