The Bank Square: Loot or testament of excellence?

“The Black man is capable of managing his own affairs.” These words from Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah still resonate today. They challenge us to reflect on our progress and future. Despite advancements, many key industries in Ghana remain foreign-dominated. Are we truly managing our own affairs?

Amid these concerns, there are examples of Ghanaian excellence worth noting. In real estate, fintech, and banking, local companies are thriving. Firms like Fidelity Bank and CalBank show what Ghanaians can achieve when given the chance.

Gone are the days when foreign companies built world-class roads. Today, Ghanaian firms like Maripoma and First Sky Construction excel in road construction. Their work meets or exceeds international standards. We need to believe in ourselves and serve our nation with integrity.

The construction of Bank Square, Ghana’s tallest building, is a proud moment. This project was completed by GoldKey, a local company. It shows confidence in our local industries. GoldKey has already transformed Accra’s skyline with Cantonments City.

Recent debates about the cost of the Bank of Ghana headquarters have caused confusion. Transparency in public spending is essential and constitutionally required. However, accountability should not be misused to discredit honest contractors.

Like many Ghanaians, I initially questioned the project's timing due to financial constraints. I believe it was ill-timed but not related to any contractor's actions.

An honest review shows that the project cost aligns with industry standards. The initial tender design was incomplete for security reasons—a common practice for sensitive projects. The cost per square meter for the Bank of Ghana headquarters is lower than other bank buildings.

Why is there outrage over a local company delivering quality at a competitive price? Yet foreign-built bank headquarters face little scrutiny despite higher costs? This double standard is concerning.

Instead of criticizing our own businesses, we should celebrate them. Supporting local enterprises demonstrates that we can achieve great things without foreign help. GoldKey’s success reflects Ghana’s success; it’s time we recognize this.

In conclusion, Bank Square stands as a testament to excellence in Ghana.
