The Mirror, Metro TV, Gino mark AU day with Jollof contest

The Madina Market in Accra was vibrant yesterday. The aromas of Jollof rice filled the air. Music and dance added to the festive atmosphere. The Mirror and Gino partnered with Metro TV’s Cook Africa Show for a Jollof Challenge. This event celebrated African Union (AU) Day.

This was the second edition of the challenge. Contestants came from various backgrounds. They included Nigerian Chef Halliday Israel, Caroline Pomeyie from Oceans Mall, Cynthia Obeng from CalBank, and Sandra Ampofoa Ofosu from Metro TV. Each contestant used Gino Jollof Mix as their main ingredient.

Chef Israel prepared traditional Nigerian Jollof. Miss Pomeyie made an assorted seafood version. Miss Obeng presented classic Ghanaian Jollof, while Miss Ofosu created her own version called Ampofoa’s Jollof. The event focused on sharing joy through cooking.

There were no winners or losers at this challenge. Instead, it was all about good food and positive vibes. When the dishes were ready, market women and passers-by joined in the feast.

Mr. Eddie Seddoh spoke to The Mirror about the Cook Africa Show's purpose. He said it celebrates African identity and promotes unity through food. It highlights unique ingredients, cooking methods, and cultural traditions across Africa.

Mr. Seddoh mentioned that colleagues like Michael Adu Gyamerah and Akosua Gyafo helped organize this event. They plan to continue celebrating AU Day each year with new perspectives.

For many market women, this event brought excitement to a typical Saturday market day. Miss Sarah Ama Serwaa Antwi has sold vegetables at Madina Market for over 15 years. She said, “Today felt different with music, food, people, and dancing.” She even enjoyed tasting the Nigerian Jollof.
