Ghanaian rapper Tulenkey has spoken out about his unique appearance at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs). He attended the event with his lips sealed shut using black masking tape.
In an interview on 3FM, Tulenkey explained his choice. He said it was not a publicity stunt. Instead, it was a bold commentary on men's emotional repression.
“It’s a message,” he stated. “It speaks of what men go through—the inner battles we fight.” He added that men are often seen as weak when they show vulnerability. The tape symbolized suffering in silence.
The TGMAs took place on May 10, 2025. Tulenkey appeared in an all-black suit, with his lips covered in tape. He made no public statements during the ceremony and communicated only through gestures. This included when he received his award for Best Hiplife Song.
His silent performance contrasted sharply with the night’s glitz and cheers. It sparked widespread discussion on social media about male mental health and artistic expression.
Tulenkey, born Chief Osei Bonsu, is known for sharp lyrics and bold storytelling. He gained fame with his breakout single “Proud Fvck Boys.” This song resonated with youth due to its honesty and social commentary.
With roots in rap and hiplife, Tulenkey weaves humor, critique, and real-life narratives into his music.
