In 2023, African Schengen visa applicants faced rejection rates twice as high as Asian applicants, despite submitting half as many applications. Six of the ten countries with the highest rejection rates globally are in Africa, with Comoros leading at 61.3%, followed by Guinea-Bissau (51%) and Ghana (47.5%). African countries submitted 2.8% of global applications but faced a 44.8% average rejection rate. These disparities highlight a growing global mobility divide, driven by systemic discrimination, passport strength, and punitive visa policies. Immigration officials often rely on subjective criteria, further disadvantaging African applicants. Despite increased global travel freedom, the gap between the most and least mobile nations has widened, disproportionately impacting African travelers.
