Davido recently appeared on The Breakfast Club. He shared his thoughts on Afrobeats.
He believes many people misunderstand what Afrobeats means. It is not a specific sound or style.
“Afrobeats is more like an umbrella term,” he explained. “It’s African music that blew up and needed a name, especially in the UK.”
He noted that the term Afrobeats comes from Fela Kuti’s genre. Over time, it became a general label for all African artists, regardless of style—R&B, trap, or dance.
Davido acknowledged it’s too late to change this perception. “We just ran with it,” he said with a laugh. He mentioned his new album as African music but categorized as Afrobeats.
He also discussed the rise of Amapiano, a popular South African sound.
“South Africans have always had great music,” he said. He praised Nigerian producers for adapting and evolving with these sounds.
In conclusion, Davido emphasized that whether it's Afrobeats or Amapiano, African music is thriving. He feels proud to be part of this movement.
