The Young African Women Congress (YAWC) Network is a not-for-profit organization. It focuses on empowering women and girls through leadership, mentorship, and advocacy. Recently, the YAWC condemned the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Nigerian Senate.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's suspension reportedly followed her petition about sexual harassment. She accused Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the Nigerian Senate, of this harassment. After her report, she lost some privileges as a senator, including official vehicles and security.
In a statement signed by Dr. Wirba Stephanie, YAWC’s Global President-elect, they called the suspension “unfortunate.” They described it as an attempt to suppress dissent. The statement emphasized that speaking out against injustice can lead to severe consequences.
The YAWC noted that this suppression affects society and democracy as a whole. They argued that it undermines Nigeria’s commitment to international treaties on women's rights. These include the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and Nigeria’s Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP).
According to CEDAW, nations must eliminate discrimination against women in politics. The suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan contradicts this obligation. International frameworks recognize that violence against women threatens their political participation.
While these treaties are essential for combating gender-based violence, enforcement remains inconsistent in Nigeria. The political arena continues to be plagued by impunity.
The YAWC called for urgent reforms from the Nigerian Senate and government. They demanded the reinstatement of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and restoration of her privileges. Additionally, they urged for robust policies to protect women from harassment.
They also advocated for support networks for women facing intimidation at work. Comprehensive education programs about sexual harassment should target both men and women.
Furthermore, they called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to recuse himself from investigations into these allegations. An unbiased investigation is necessary for accountability.
“Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension is a wake-up call,” said YAWC leaders. “We cannot remain silent in the face of injustice.”
The Young African Women Congress stands with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and all women who speak out against gender-based violence. They urge everyone—government officials, civil society members, and citizens—to unite for a safe environment for women everywhere.
