Bawku Conflict: Twene Jonas Criticizes President Mahama and IGP Yohuno
Twene Jonas, a social media commentator, criticized President John Dramani Mahama. He also targeted Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno. This criticism was over the ongoing conflict in Bawku, located in the Upper East region.
In a TikTok video, Jonas expressed his concerns about peace in Bawku. He claimed that IGP Yohuno failed to restore order after visiting the town. Jonas called for former IGP George Akuffo Dampare to be reinstated immediately.
He accused IGP Yohuno of being afraid of rival factions in Bawku. According to him, this fear allowed the fighting to continue unchecked. Jonas recounted his own experiences selling CDs in Bawku without fear.
He emphasized that no one is above Ghana's laws. Perpetrators of violence should face punishment for their actions against police personnel.
Jonas mentioned receiving calls from policemen who feared for their lives due to escalating violence. He criticized President Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for not resolving the situation. He labeled them as incompetent for failing to protect police officers.
His remarks followed a tragic incident where two young police officers were killed by suspected robbers on April 13, 2025. This occurred after IGP Yohuno visited injured officers during his trip to Bawku.
Social media users reacted to Jonas' comments with mixed opinions. Some supported his views while others recalled past events under previous leaderships.
Earlier, a police officer's wife appealed to IGP Yohuno for the withdrawal of officers from Bawku amid the crisis. She highlighted casualties and challenges faced by the Ghana Police Service there.
Many Ghanaians shared their reactions online regarding her appeal and the ongoing situation in Bawku.
