Legendary Ghanaian broadcaster Mike Eghan died on June 3, 2025. He was 89 years old. The specific cause of death has not been disclosed.

Eghan was known as 'The Magnificent Emperor.' He had a significant impact on broadcasting in Ghana and beyond. Since the news broke, tributes have poured in from fans and colleagues worldwide.

Eghan's career spanned six decades. He was a pioneering figure in Ghanaian media. His charismatic presence made him a household name across Africa and among the diaspora.

Early Life and Career

Mike Eghan was born on March 14, 1936, in Sekondi-Takoradi. He was the fifth of nine siblings. Initially, he worked at Barclays Bank but later pursued a career in media.

Inspired by his father's love for radio, he joined the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in 1961. There, he co-hosted Radio Dance Time with David Larbi. This show quickly gained popularity as GBC was the only radio station in Ghana at that time.

BBC and International Recognition

In 1965, Eghan moved to the UK to work with BBC Africa Service. He hosted Music with African Beat for four years, showcasing African sounds globally. This made him one of the first black broadcasters at the BBC.

Iconic photographs from this period captured his charisma and cultural significance.

Return to Ghana

After returning to Ghana in the early 1970s, Eghan rejoined GBC. He launched The Mike Eghan Show on Saturday nights. The program featured entertainment and education with guests like Miriam Makeba.

In 1971, he served as master of ceremonies for the Soul to Soul concert at Black Star Square. This event celebrated cultural ties between Africa and African-Americans.

Later Years and Legacy

In 2019, Eghan published his memoir titled *The Emperor’s Story From the Centre of the World.* It offered insights into his life and career.

Beyond broadcasting, he contributed to arts management and ventured into hotel business.

Eghan passed away leaving behind a lasting legacy that inspires many today. He will be remembered as a trailblazer who advocated for African culture and heritage.
