Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin Criticizes "Detty December"
Ghana's Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has spoken out against "Detty December." He expressed his concerns during a recent trip abroad. Mr. Bagbin was shocked to learn about the term's international use.
He believes it allows foreigners to come to Ghana and behave poorly. At a Labour Day event, he condemned the term for damaging Ghana's reputation. The 67-year-old politician linked it to rising substance abuse in the country.
Bagbin also criticized President Akufo-Addo’s initiatives, "Year of Return" and "Beyond the Return." He feels these efforts are overshadowed by activities that harm Ghana’s moral values. “We cannot move from 'Homecoming' to 'Year of Return' and then desecrate this holy country,” he stated.
He called for unity in opposing "Detty December." Bagbin vowed to continue fighting for Ghana’s integrity as a holy land.
His comments have sparked debate among Ghanaians. Some support him, while others criticize his views. One user noted that "Detty December" attracted many visitors during the "Year of Return."
Another commenter suggested that Bagbin should spend more time with family instead. Others pointed out that changing cultural terms is often ineffective.
In related news, the government launched the "Black Star Experience." This initiative aims to promote tourism and attract foreign visitors to Ghana. It will celebrate arts and culture year-round, establishing Ghana as Africa's gateway for global travelers.
