Rex Omar Sparks Debate: “Grammys Are Not for Ghanaian Artistes”
Veteran Ghanaian musician Rex Omar has sparked a debate online. He urged local musicians to focus on the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs). Rex believes Ghanaians should take pride in their own awards instead of chasing international ones.
In an interview with GhanaWeb on April 19, 2025, he stated that major international awards like the Grammys are not meant for Ghanaian artists. He emphasized the importance of appreciating and respecting local awards.
Rex explained that platforms like BET created their own award systems. He believes Ghana can develop an awards scheme that rivals the Grammys through collaboration and promotion.
He said, "When I hear discussions about the Grammy, it’s crucial to understand it is primarily for America." He added that disrespecting the Ghana Music Awards while aspiring for the Grammys seems contradictory.
Rex also mentioned that if Ghanaians speak positively about their awards, they could attract participation from other countries. Building a comprehensive value chain is essential for making a significant impact in the industry.
Rex Omar was recently appointed as a presidential staffer for the Black Star Experience by President John Dramani Mahama. He gained fame in 1989 after releasing his album "Aware Pa."
Many social media users congratulated him on this appointment. At the 2021 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, he looked dapper in a shiny long-sleeve kaftan and tailored trousers.
He attended the event with award-winning musician Okyeame Kwame, who wore a custom-made ensemble. Earlier, Rex celebrated his daughter Mimi's graduation from the University of Ghana, Legon.
Mimi received her Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering. Rex shared a proud photo with his wife Abiba and their daughter on Facebook during this milestone celebration.
