Ghanaian Musician Sarkodie Allegedly Sues Ecobank Over Lookalike in Ad
Sarkodie is reportedly suing Ecobank Ghana. He claims the bank used his image without permission. The bank featured a young man who looks like him in an ad. This advertisement is part of their anti-fraud campaign. It warns customers that appearances can be deceiving.
Legal documents from Sarkodie's team have surfaced online. In these documents, he seeks damages for violating his image rights. The ad allegedly misled the public into thinking he endorsed it.
The case has been filed at the Commercial Division of the High Court in Accra. Sarkodie, whose real name is Michael Owusu Addo, argues that the ad harms his reputation. He is also a brand ambassador for First Bank, a competitor of Ecobank.
Sarkodie's team believes using a lookalike could hurt his business deals and public image. In the legal writ, he asks the court to declare that Ecobank breached his rights. He wants them to stop using his likeness in future ads and remove current ones.
Additionally, he seeks damages for the harm caused by this situation. The document warns that if Ecobank does not respond within eight days, the case may proceed without them.
This drama has sparked debate among Ghanaians about who is right or wrong. Some social media users have shared their opinions on the matter.
One user noted that people should understand the ad's concept against fraud. Another questioned if brands should avoid using lookalikes altogether. Others suggested both sides had valid points and should have communicated better before launching the ad.
In related news, Sarkodie reportedly does not like repeating sneakers, especially Air Force ones. His stylist mentioned he usually wears them just once due to his love for fashion and luxury outfits.
