"I wear a nose mask and a hoodie to class to keep a low profile": Guru

Ghanaian Musician Guru Discusses Balancing Fame and SRC Presidency

Ghanaian rapper Guru recently shared his experiences as SRC President at the University of Ghana. He spoke with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM about the challenges of fame while studying.

Guru, whose real name is Maradona Yeboah Agyei, found it hard to live a normal student life. To avoid attention, he often wore a nose mask and hoodie to classes. Despite this, many students still recognized him.

He noted that the University of Ghana does not require students to answer questions during lectures. This helped him maintain a low profile for nearly three years without most students knowing he was enrolled.

Guru also discussed academic pressure. He made friends with high-achieving students to help him keep good grades. He aimed for more than just passing grades and worked hard to maintain a high GPA.

As SRC President, Guru faced additional pressure. He mentioned that students dislike when public figures bring their fame into campus life. Therefore, he focused on staying humble and fulfilling his duties as a student leader.

Guru won the UGSRC elections on September 18, 2024. He ran alongside vice-presidential candidate Jeffery Adu-Yeboah and secured 9,455 out of 18,659 votes cast. Their victory represented 50.7% of the total votes.

Their closest competitors received 6,645 votes or 35.6%. Social media users reacted positively to his presidency announcement. One user praised another musician for balancing school and music successfully.

Another congratulated Guru and encouraged him to fulfill his promises to students. Recently, D Cryme also won an SRC presidential race at Methodist University and celebrated with friends on campus.

Ghanaians expressed happiness for both musicians on social media platforms.
