Criss Waddle Criticizes Akufo-Addo and NPP for Tax Burdens
Ghanaian musician Criss Waddle has criticized the previous NPP administration. He claims they would have imposed more taxes based on current global events.
Waddle joked that they might have created taxes from the US tariff war. He specifically mentioned the E-Levy and betting tax as examples of this burden. His comments sparked mixed reactions among Ghanaians.
Some found his remarks funny, while NPP supporters were offended. In a post on social media platform X, he used satire to illustrate his point.
He referenced recent world events, like the election of a new Pope. Waddle humorously suggested these could lead to new taxes, such as a “Pope levy” or “Trump levy.”
His exaggerated percentages highlighted how any major news could justify extra charges under the former government. The E-Levy taxed electronic transactions, while the betting tax took a portion of gambling winnings.
Both policies faced heavy criticism from young people in Ghana. In his post, he wrote about how Ghanaians might panic over these hypothetical levies.
Waddle’s post went viral and resonated with many users online. However, some NPP supporters accused him of being partisan and found it distasteful.
Recently, President Mahama's government removed the E-Levy and betting tax through new legislation. This decision was welcomed by many Ghanaians who had long opposed these financial policies.
In other news, Criss Waddle recently gifted GH₵2,000 to TikTok creator Famela GH for promoting Ghanaian music. Famela is known for nostalgic performances of classic songs, including Waddle's hit "Bie Gya."
This act follows Nigerian artist Davido's $5,000 gift to a Ghanaian fan.
