Kuami Eugene Appeals to Mahama Over Dollar Depreciation
Kuami Eugene, a popular Ghanaian musician, has reached out to President John Dramani Mahama. He is asking the president to slow down the rise of the cedi against the dollar.
Eugene expressed his concerns on social media. He noted that his dollar savings are losing value due to the cedi's appreciation. Many Ghanaians abroad share similar worries about this issue.
Since April, the Ghana cedi has appreciated significantly against major currencies. It rose from Gh₵ 15 per dollar on April 1st to Gh₵ 10 per dollar now. This change has made sending money back home more expensive for many.
On Twitter, Kuami Eugene shared that most of his dollar reserves have lost value. He feels both happy and sad about the cedi's strength. "We beg Pres. @JDMahama for slow down small," he wrote.
He echoed sentiments from other Ghanaians who feel conflicted about the rising cedi. U.S.-based Ghanaian Kevin Taylor praised Mahama’s administration but lamented the challenges of sending money home.
Taylor mentioned that Ghanaians voted for NDC to reduce currency imbalance but now want stability at Gh₵ 10 per dollar.
Reactions to Kuami Eugene's comments varied among Ghanaians online. Some offered support while others made light of his situation.
Earlier, Kuami Eugene denied accusations of stealing from other artists in his music. He clarified that he only samples their work, which is a legitimate practice in music creation.
