Naana Donkor Arthur Laments Cedi's Appreciation Against the Dollar
Naana Donkor Arthur recently expressed her frustration in a video. She is concerned about the dollar's strength against the Ghanaian cedi. This situation has created financial challenges for her.
Living abroad, she finds it harder to send money home. The rising dollar value means she spends more dollars to support loved ones in Ghana. She urged people back home to pray for a decline in the dollar’s strength.
After receiving backlash online, she removed the video from her social media accounts. Her comments come as the cedi has gained against major currencies recently.
The cedi appreciated by 6.25% against the dollar week-on-week. It is now the best-performing currency among 15 Sub-Saharan African currencies. Year-to-date, it has grown by 16.29% against the dollar.
As of May 12, 2025, the mid-rate was GH¢13.60 per dollar in retail markets and GH¢12.89 in interbank markets. The market had US$378.6 million circulating.
Additionally, the cedi gained 7.61% against the British pound and 5.81% against the euro this week. Many Ghanaians are hopeful this will lower prices for goods and services.
However, some businesses are hesitant to reduce their prices despite these gains. In a related note, a Ghanaian mine worker prayed for a stronger dollar in a viral TikTok video.
His plea highlights concerns among workers whose salaries depend on the dollar's value. Since early 2025, the cedi has steadily appreciated against major currencies, dropping to GH¢13.30 per US dollar.
