The Konongo Traditional Council in the Ashanti Region has taken action. They handed over Mr. Kwabena Amofa, known as Alhaji, to the police. He is being questioned for his alleged role in illegal mining activities.
Mr. Amofa is suspected of leading galamsey operations in Konongo. These activities have caused significant environmental damage, especially to water bodies and farmlands.
Nana Dr. Ing. Awuah Abedimisa II, the Konongohene, led the council's efforts. They previously summoned Mr. Amofa to discuss concerns about his involvement in destructive mining.
During that meeting, he asked for leniency and promised to stop his operations. However, the council later found that conditions had worsened.
This prompted Nana Dr. Awuah to call another meeting with Mr. Amofa and the full council. After discussions, they decided to hand him over to the Konongo District Police Command for investigation and possible legal action.
Residents have praised this decision as a strong move against illegal mining. They hope it will help restore environmental health in the area.
