Torrential rains on Sunday displaced about 500 residents in Awutu Senya East Municipality. The Central Region experienced significant destruction in several communities.
The hardest-hit areas include Iron City, Dokutsekope, Akweley Cross River, and Kpometey Zongo. Many homes were submerged, and residents lost valuable belongings like appliances and household items.
Displaced residents expressed frustration over the damage caused by the floods. They also criticized the lack of preparedness for such disasters.
Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the Member of Parliament for Kasoa, spoke to Class News. She confirmed that temporary shelters have been arranged for affected families. Longer-term solutions are also being considered.
Seth Sabah Serwonoo-Banini, the Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, addressed the flooding issue. He attributed it to inadequate drainage systems and blocked waterways. The Assembly has identified these problems and will implement measures soon.
"We know the root causes of flooding," said the MCE. "We are improving drainage and enforcing building regulations to prevent future occurrences."
