The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has serious concerns. They question the neutrality of the committee investigating Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. CDM describes the committee as politically compromised and lacking credibility.
In a statement, CDM argued that the committee's composition undermines impartiality. This raises doubts about the integrity of the investigation process. They noted that political affiliations and past controversies mar the committee's make-up.
CDM pointed out members like former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo, Justice Gabriel Pwamang, and Prof. James Sefah-Dzisah. The group questioned their ability to remain impartial in this sensitive matter.
While they acknowledged Justice Asiedu’s presence from a previous administration, they believe it is insufficient. “This lone balance does little to counter perceived bias,” CDM stated.
They cited international standards from the United Nations and African Commission principles. These frameworks require impartial mechanisms for judicial discipline. CDM asserted that the current committee structure violates these standards.
Due to these concerns, CDM calls for immediate dissolution and reconstitution of the committee. They demand a new body made up of “truly independent and politically neutral” individuals.
The group warned that inaction could erode trust in Ghana’s democratic process. It could also damage Ghana’s image on the global stage.
