COCOBOD CEO urges return to core mandate of funding cocoa

Dr. Ransford Abbey, the Chief Executive of COCOBOD, criticized the Board's focus on road construction. He spoke during a tour in the Central Cocoa Region. At an interactive meeting in Assin Dawomako Kobeda, he addressed cocoa farmers.

Dr. Abbey stated that road construction is not COCOBOD’s responsibility. This duty belongs to the Ministry of Roads and Highways. He noted that COCOBOD's involvement in road projects has caused financial issues.

The second phase of the Cocoa Roads Improvement Programme (CRIP II) contributed to these problems. Contracts under CRIP II were in U.S. dollars, leading to a debt of GH¢21 billion. Dr. Abbey said this massive debt has left COCOBOD financially constrained.

He emphasized that COCOBOD must refocus on its core functions. These include funding cocoa purchases and supplying inputs for production. The Board does not receive government funding for road construction.

Past road projects aimed to improve access for cocoa farmers. They helped transport cocoa beans from farms to buying centers. However, Dr. Abbey stated such projects cannot continue due to financial strain.

Future initiatives will depend on COCOBOD's fiscal recovery efforts. He reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to supporting farmers across all regions. He urged farmers to help restore COCOBOD’s financial health for the 2025/2026 crop season.

The meeting attracted farmers from various districts, including Assin South and Assin North. Many voiced concerns about challenges in cocoa production and sought support.
