Democracy Hub protesters free as A-G drop charges

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has filed a nolle prosequi. This means he wants to discontinue the case against those linked to the Democracy Hub protests.

In his notice, Dr. Ayine stated that the state will not pursue the case further. The individuals affected include social activists Oliver Barker-Vormawor and Felicity Nelson. Social media influencer Elorm Ama Governor-Ababio, known as Ama Governor, is also included.

Other names in the withdrawal are Michael Amofa, Nii Ayi, and Frederick Boateng. Additionally, deportee Iddrisu Yusif, Wendell Isaac Yeboah, Fanny Otoo, and Samuel Samakor are mentioned.

A total of 53 protesters were arrested during a three-day demonstration from September 21 to September 23. The protesters demanded more government action against illegal mining (galamsey).

They were charged with unlawful assembly after blocking roads and dismantling police barriers. They also obstructed traffic and set fire to properties at Accra’s 37 Roundabout.

These charges led to widespread public debate. Many Ghanaians and civil society organizations called for their release.
