Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, has made a significant announcement.
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a Facebook post on May 28, 2025, Justice Srem-Sai confirmed the investigation. Wontumi faces serious charges including fraud and money laundering.
The Deputy Attorney-General noted that this probe extends beyond Ghana's borders. It is part of an international organized crime investigation with global law enforcement agencies.
Justice Srem-Sai stated, “Suspect Bernard Antwi Boasiako, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences.” The investigation includes asset recovery processes to prevent further loss of suspected crime proceeds.
He mentioned that there is a second phase linked to a larger international scheme. The Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) is collaborating with international partners to pursue leads.
This statement follows protests by Minority NPP Members of Parliament. On Thursday, they staged a walkout in Parliament and marched to EOCO headquarters in Accra.
They demanded the release of their party member after reports of his overnight detention. Wontumi could not meet a GH¢50 million bail condition set by EOCO.
For over three hours, NPP MPs and party executives protested outside EOCO’s offices. They condemned the bail terms as excessive and politically motivated.
The Deputy Attorney-General’s statement provides detailed justification for Wontumi’s detention. It highlights the seriousness of the allegations against him and how law enforcement is handling the case carefully.
