At least five people are dead after a shooting in Asiyaw. The incident occurred at a sand winning site in the Eastern Region. A meeting was held to discuss illegal sand mining concerns.
The boundary chief of the Adonteng Division led the visit. He was accompanied by sub-chiefs and community members. They aimed to address ongoing protests from farmers and residents.
Local farmers have complained about environmental damage from illegal sand mining. They say it has harmed farmlands and reduced crop yields, including pawpaw, cassava, and maize.
Eyewitnesses reported that armed men opened fire on the gathering. This happened shortly after the delegation arrived at the site. The attackers were allegedly ordered by individuals known as Togbe and Alanyo.
The shooting caused panic and chaos, resulting in at least five deaths. Several others were injured during the attack. It is unclear what triggered the violence, but tensions had been rising between community members and miners.
Security agencies have been deployed to restore calm in the area. Investigations are underway to find those responsible for the shooting.
