ECOWAS launches 50th anniversary celebrations with call for unity and economic resilience

Dignitaries and leaders from Africa gathered to launch the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, welcomed everyone warmly.

He emphasized the importance of this milestone. It is a time for celebration and reflection.

Ablakwa noted it is also a chance to renew commitment to regional integration.

“This golden jubilee is not just a celebration,” he stated.

“It is a moment to consolidate our gains over five decades.” He stressed the need for dedication to peace, economic growth, and unity in West Africa.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Oumar Alieu Touray, also spoke at the event. He highlighted key achievements of ECOWAS over the years.

Dr. Touray expressed optimism about the region's future. He praised progress in economic cooperation and integration.

“There is every reason to celebrate,” he said confidently.

“Through the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, we have broken trade barriers.” This has allowed free movement across member states.

These efforts have created opportunities and accelerated development in the region.

The event marks the start of activities celebrating ECOWAS’s 50-year journey. The focus will be on promoting regional cooperation, economic development, and political stability in West Africa.
