FDA boss elected first Director-General of African Medicines Agency

Dr. Delese Mimi Darko has been elected as the first Director-General of the African Medicines Agency (AMA).

She is also the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana's Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).

The election occurred at the 2nd Ordinary Session of the Conference of State Parties in Kigali, Rwanda.

Dr. Darko was chosen after a competitive selection process that began in January 2025.

This process attracted 149 applications from across Africa.

Her election is a significant milestone for Ghana and Africa's health sector.

It aims to strengthen regulation and oversight of medical products and health technologies.

Her appointment has received widespread celebration in Ghana and throughout Africa.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudjeto-Ablakwa congratulated Dr. Darko and "Team Ghana" on their successful campaign.

He also praised President John Dramani Mahama for his strong leadership during this time.

Dr. Darko will relocate to Rwanda soon to lead the AMA.

The AMA is an important African Union body focused on harmonizing medicine regulation among member states.

Its goal is to ensure access to safe, effective, and quality-assured medical products.
