First Lady praises Ghanasco on the launch of 65th anniversary

First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama launched the 65th anniversary of Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) on Saturday in Tamale. She emphasized the school's legacy of excellence and its role in shaping future generations.

As an alumna, Mrs. Mahama highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to education. She spoke about the transformative power of learning during her address.

The First Lady praised GHANASCO's contributions to Ghana. She stated, "GHANASCO is more than just a school; it is a community." It serves as a training ground for leaders, professionals, artisans, and patriots. She celebrated the school's 65-year commitment to nurturing well-rounded young Ghanaians.

Mrs. Mahama acknowledged several notable GHANASCO alumni. These include Alhaji Alhassan Andani, Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Awal, and John Jinapor. Other alumni are Alhassan Suhuyini, football legends Abedi Pele and Kwame Ayew, and Professor Bashiru Imoro Saeed.

She connected the school’s influence to national leadership. The First Lady noted that President Mahama often recalls his time at GHANASCO. He credits his experiences there with shaping his leadership style.

"His experiences at GHANASCO influenced his commitment to transforming education," she added. The First Lady reiterated the government's dedication to improving education through various initiatives.

These initiatives focus on infrastructure improvements and enhancing teacher training. They also prioritize Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Professor Saeed echoed her sentiments about GHANASCO's mission to cultivate future leaders. This goal is exemplified by both President and Mrs. Mahama's achievements.

Headmaster Mr. Douglas Haruna Yakubu reflected on the school's evolution during the event. He urged students to emulate their successful alumni while avoiding negative behaviors like vandalism and drug abuse.

He appealed for government assistance in providing essential facilities such as a library and dormitory improvements.

Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu assured support from the government for GHANASCO. He recited a line from the school anthem while commending the community's efforts.

Mr. Iddrisu announced that tenders for an Assembly Hall and dormitory would be issued soon. He also pledged to address classroom furniture shortages at the school.

Regarding student discipline, he promised to empower authorities for searches and impose penalties for misconduct. Plans are underway to review basic school curriculum emphasizing native languages as foundational learning tools.

The 65th anniversary celebration will take place in October this year. The event was attended by dignitaries including Ali Adolf John (Northern Regional Minister) and Abu Takoro (Mayor of Tamale).
