Residents near the Weija Dam are ignoring warnings from the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL). They refuse to leave their homes due to desperation and lack of relocation options.
This week, GWCL began spilling excess water by opening two of five gates. This action was necessary because of rising water levels from heavy rains. The company stated that spillage is crucial for protecting the dam's integrity and preventing disasters.
Many residents in flood-prone areas feel they have nowhere else to go. One resident expressed frustration, saying, “Every year, they open the dam, and water enters our homes. But where do they expect us to go?”
Past spillages have caused flooding, displacement, and property damage. Despite their fears, residents remain determined not to leave. Some said they would climb onto rooftops rather than abandon their homes.
“Even if the water comes, we’ll stay on the roof if we have to,” one resident said. “We’re not leaving because we have no other choice.”
The Weija Dam spillage has become an annual issue for nearby communities. Many residents believe authorities did not engage them properly before opening the gates this year. They expressed anger towards GWCL for failing to inform them or involve community leaders beforehand.
“They didn’t come to speak with us,” a community member said. “They just opened the gates. We should have been part of the conversation.”
Currently, only two gates are open, but GWCL may open more depending on weather conditions and water levels.
