GNAT ladies urge gov't to extend maternity leave for teachers

The Ghana National Association of Teachers Ladies Society (GNAT-LAS) is calling for change. They want the government to extend paid maternity leave from 12 weeks to at least six months.

This request aims to help nursing mothers, especially teachers. A longer leave would allow them to care for their newborns and prepare for work.

Catherine Asaam made this appeal during a recent event in Abura Dunkwa. She is the outgoing GNAT-LAS District Coordinator and Headteacher of Brafoyaw AME Zion 'B' Basic School.

Asaam highlighted that health experts recommend six months of exclusive breastfeeding. She stated, “Our request is rooted in maternal and child health concerns.” She believes extending leave will benefit both mothers and children.

The event was themed “The Ghana Education Service @50: Achievements, Challenges and the Way Forward.” It included several dignitaries, such as District Chief Executive Ms. Henrietta Baah and Regional GNAT Chairman Engineer Dr. Wilberforce Eshun.

Mr. Daniel Mensah Wardy, the District Chief Executive for AAK, acknowledged their request. He noted that the governing NDC has pledged to extend maternity leave to four months in its 2024 manifesto.

Wardy promised to bring GNAT-LAS's request to party leadership’s attention. Guest speaker Mrs. Henrietta Ghartey Paintsil emphasized the importance of female teachers in national development.

She said, “Empowering the female teacher is key to empowering students.” Thanks to educators, basic education is now accessible for all Ghanaian children.

The event also featured an exhibition by six GNAT-LAS locals, a Miss GNAT-LAS beauty contest, and elections for new district executives.
