The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has issued a clarification.
It is not involved in the industrial action by the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL). This strike is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
Dr. Frederick Appoh, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of GRDA, signed the statement. He emphasized that GRDA and GRCL are separate entities. Each has distinct legal mandates and operational responsibilities.
The GRDA owns, develops, maintains, and regulates railway infrastructure. In contrast, the GRCL operates railway services for passengers and freight.
Established under the Railways Act of 2008 (Act 779), the GRDA reassured the public. It remains fully operational and unaffected by GRCL’s planned demonstration.
The Authority also stated it has not initiated or endorsed any public protest. Dr. Appoh mentioned they are focused on preparing for the new Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line.
This line spans 97 kilometers and will soon have two new trains from the government. The Tema-Mpakadan project is a major milestone for Ghana's railway development.
The GRDA is committed to implementing Ghana’s Railway Master Plan. It aims to develop efficient standard-gauge railway infrastructure across the country.
The Authority urged the public to distinguish between its mandate and that of GRCL. The planned strike by GRCL does not affect GRDA operations.
“Our staff remain dedicated to advancing key national infrastructure projects,” said Dr. Appoh. He thanked the public for their continued support and understanding.
