The Western Regional Police Command has taken strong action against illegal mining. They disabled over 120 changfang machines at Wassa Gyapa. Thirteen individuals were arrested during this operation.
This crackdown occurred on Monday, May 19, 2025. It is part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, known as galamsey.
The arrested suspects include Nana Ampadu, Stephen Tetteh, and Yaw Dalame. Other names are Samuel Amoah, Kwame Oppong, and Francis Oduom. The list also includes Owusu Asare, Atta Kwame, Apiyanga Emmanuel, Kojo Montanakito, Maxwell Owusu, Obofo Vincent, and Soogal Fataw.
Along with the machines, police retrieved six motorbikes from the site. The suspects will appear in Tarkwa Circuit Court today, May 20, 2025.
Authorities say this operation is part of a larger strategy. They aim to protect the region's environment and water bodies from illegal activities.
