On Wednesday, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh joined Czech President Petr Pavel. They officially inaugurated the Kpone Katamanso Municipal Hospital in Greater Accra Region.
This modern 40-bed hospital is equipped with advanced medical equipment. It is one of 12 hospitals started two years ago to improve healthcare access. The project shows a commitment to enhance healthcare infrastructure across Ghana.
The Kpone Katamanso Hospital offers many services. These include an outpatient department, public health wing, and surgical suite. It also has a maternity ward with delivery and neonatal intensive care units (NICU). Other facilities include a laboratory, pharmacy, x-ray department, and dedicated wards for male, female, and pediatric patients.
Additionally, the hospital features a service block with laundry and storage facilities. There is on-site accommodation for staff as well. The project includes fully equipped medical devices and systems. It also comes with a one-year warranty, maintenance plan, and staff training programs.
The €75.5 million project was funded by Erste Group Bank AG and Ceska Sporitelna a.s. An €8.612 million export credit guarantee was provided by EGAP—the Czech Republic’s Export Guarantee and Insurance Corporation.
During the event, Minister Akandoh thanked the Czech Republic for its partnership. He stated that President Mahama’s government aims to complete all hospital projects nationwide. “We do not believe in opening hospitals only to lock them up,” he said.
Akandoh emphasized the goal of providing equitable healthcare to all Ghanaians. He invited newly assigned doctors, nurses, and support staff to step forward to activate services immediately.
President Petr Pavel praised Ghana's commitment to healthcare development. He reaffirmed the Czech Republic’s support for future collaboration in this sector.
Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea from the Ghana Health Service stressed the need for new hospitals to become operational quickly. He mentioned that 11 more facilities under this initiative will open soon.
These upcoming hospitals are located in Jumap, Nkwatia, Kwabeng, Achiase, and Adukrom in Eastern Region; Suame, Drobonso, Sabronum, Manso Nkwanta, and Twedie in Ashanti Region; and Mim in Ahafo Region.
