Ghana’s Green Africa Youth Organisation (GAYO) has won a £1 million prize. This award will help expand its environmental initiatives. It marks a significant milestone in grassroots climate action.
The announcement coincided with this year’s Workers’ Day celebrations. It is seen as strong support for community-led solutions to environmental issues. The prize will allow GAYO to increase its impact in Ghana and beyond.
Desmond Alugnoa, Co-Founder of GAYO, expressed gratitude for the recognition. He called it validation of their commitment to vulnerable communities facing climate challenges. “This award shows the strength of community-driven innovation,” Alugnoa said.
He emphasized that those most affected by climate change should lead solutions. Alugnoa also mentioned ongoing challenges, such as limited resources and policy support needs.
Looking ahead, he shared GAYO's vision to expand programs and build partnerships. They aim to inspire a new generation of environmental leaders across Africa.
