IGP refutes claims of special recruitment for Bawku youth

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, clarified his recent comments. These comments were about police recruitment for the youth in Bawku. Media reports suggested preferential treatment for this area.

During a visit to Bawku, the IGP assured residents of inclusive recruitment opportunities. However, some online outlets claimed he promised “priority” recruitment for Bawku's youth. He stated that this misrepresents his original message.

The IGP explained that his assurance was part of a peacebuilding strategy. This strategy aims to encourage youth to lay down their weapons and reintegrate into society.

He clarified, “We never said recruitment would be exclusive to the youth of Bawku.” He added that they will go through the normal recruitment process like all qualified Ghanaian youth.

The IGP emphasized that recruitment would be decentralized. Eligible youth from across the country can participate without traveling to Accra or major cities.

“This approach ensures equal access and fairness in the recruitment process,” he said. It is not a special exercise for any specific group but a national effort.

He also reiterated the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to restoring peace in Bawku. The IGP encouraged residents to report any police issues or mistakes for prompt correction.

“We are here to work with you,” he stated. “If there are grievances, we are ready to address them. Let’s move forward together in peace.”
